Coping With Mental Illness
Mental illness can be complicated and often misunderstood by those surrounding the person with this illness. Often times, behaviors of this type of illness are extreme, odd and at times withdrawn. People witnessing these behaviors may not realize at first that the person is facing a mental illness and reacts negatively towards that person. Some mental illnesses can be treated with medications but there are some that cannot and there isn’t a cure.
In many circumstances, counseling is an option and can work. However, in order for it to be successful, the individual must want to get better and is willing to be open and honest with the therapist so they can make meaningful changes in their lifestyle. Unfortunately, people with mental illness often can be delusional. Many exhibit paranoia which makes counseling difficult because they may not recognize the fact that they even have a problem and believe it is those around them that are causing the issues.
The option of taking medication to control the behavior often is not a solution because often times they forget to take them on a regular basis or take them for a while thinking they are cured and stop taking the medication. Medication needs to be taken regularly as prescribed or the behaviors cannot be controlled and the individuals having difficulty in functioning properly. It can be a struggle for caretakers to keep them on their medications.
Caring for a person who has a mental illness can be a challenge as there are some individuals who are dangerous to others and themselves. Some can be suicidal. Others are a great danger to others. They key is to try and keep the person on their prescriptions and continue with their counseling. A combination of these two treatments can keep the person more stable and function better in everyday society. Stability is the key for these individuals.
People who have mental illness can be more than the average person can handle. Often caring for them at home is not practical or feasible. At that point, they may have to be placed in a residential program until they stabilize and then can return to a home environment. Then there are those that unfortunately cannot function in society and need to be permanently placed in a facility. There are different levels of mental illness and how they function in society. A professional can help identify the level and suggest a course of action, whether it be medication, counseling or something more. There are people in the medical community who can help those when the need is identified.
